August 2025
I don’t always feel like writing a full review for everything. I was inspired by Modern Mrs. Darcy’s Quick Lit posts and decided to do something similar as a way to briefly discuss the books I read in a month but don’t write full reviews for.
I read 15 books in August, and it’s looking more and more likely that I’ll reach my reading goal of 100 books for the year well before December 31!
I’ve only reviewed a few of my August reads already, but here they are:
We Used To Live Here, Marcus Kliewer;
Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil, V.E. Schwab; and
We Met Like This, Kasie West.
Here are my thoughts on the rest of my August reads!
Feeding the Monster: Why Horror Has a Hold on Us, Anna Bogutskaya (purchased) – 4⭐
This was a thought-provoking read. I’m always interested in reading about why people are drawn to horror books and movies.
Sour Candy, Kealan Patrick Burke (library) – 4⭐
This novella was a quick, fun read! It would make a great choice for a creepy fall TBR!
Cat + Gamer Volume 7, Wataru Nadatani (purchased) – 5⭐
This was another perfect entry in this series!! I can’t believe the next volume will be the last one.
Smile For the Cameras, Miranda Smith (library) – 3.5⭐
This was fun! This felt like the book version of a slasher movie. I felt a little disappointed in the reveal because it was a tad too predictable, but it was still an entertaining read.
Mapping the Interior, Stephen Graham Jones (library) – 3⭐
I liked this – it had some haunting imagery. I’m waiting on some other SGJ novellas from the library now.
Oddball, Sarah Andersen (library) – 4⭐
This was really fun! I love her art style.
Personal, Lee Child (library) – 3.5⭐
I loved seeing Reacher get involved in an international case! This was an interesting one in that I wasn’t used to seeing Reacher outside of the US, but it still read like the usual Reacher novel.
Mooncakes, Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu (library) – 4⭐
I have been wanting to read this for ages! The story was sweet, and the art was delightful!
The Midnight Line, Lee Child (library) – 3⭐
I really liked this initially and the mystery of the ring’s owner drew me in, but it petered out for me by the end.
A Game in Yellow, Hailey Piper (library) – 3⭐
I didn’t really understand this enough to love it, but I think books about creepy books are fun, and I liked the ending!
Past Tense, Lee Child (library) – 4⭐
This is probably my favourite Reacher novel so far! I loved the way the two stories slowly came together, and really enjoyed getting a bit of Reacher’s family history.
Make Me, Lee Child (library) – 3.5⭐
I really liked this one, but the ending left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. I know part of Reacher’s thing, and which I usually appreciate, is that the bad guys don’t get to explain or monologue and Reacher doesn’t get involved with the aftermath, but the reveal of what was going on in this town was so awful and sinister that the typical Reacher departure felt too abrupt for me to find it satisfying.
