August 2024
I’ve been reading so much, but I don’t always feel like writing a full review for everything. I was inspired by Modern Mrs. Darcy’s Quick Lit posts, as well as Hannah at So Obsessed With‘s monthly Quick Lit posts, and decided to do something similar as a way to briefly discuss the books I read in a month but don’t write full reviews for.
We’re midway through October and I’m just getting to my August quick lit post. I kept meaning to work on reviews for some of the books I read, but clearly never got around to it!
I read 12 books in August, the same number I read in July. I managed to review a couple of them on the blog:
The Lost Story by Meg Shaffer; and
Long Live Evil by Sarah Rees Brennan.
Here are my comments on the others I read in August:
Hunting Adeline, H.D. Carlton (Kindle Unlimited) – 1⭐
Well well well. Turns out that maddening cliffhanger in book one made me too curious to ignore book two. So I read this, and it was definitely worse than the first book. It was everything I couldn’t stand about book one, at a higher intensity.
Ascension, Nicholas Binge (purchased) – 3⭐
The premise for this was really intriguing and I was drawn into the story initially, but it dragged on for me in terms of pacing and didn’t really engage me.
London Rules, Mick Herron (purchased) – 4⭐
This was another excellent entry in this series! It was fun to see this story focus on Roderick Ho, one of the stranger Slow Horses, and I’ve been purposely putting off picking up the next in the series because I’ll be that much closer to running out of books in this series to read!
Unfinished Business: Notes of a Chronic Re-reader, Vivian Gornick (purchased) – 3⭐
I don’t really know how to review this because it’s a personal memoir of sorts. I wasn’t familiar with most of the books discussed but as an examination of her life as a reader, it was fairly interesting.
The Book Swap, Tessa Bickers (e-ARC) – 3⭐
This story had its moments, but the premise felt too thin to warrant an entire book.
The Body Next Door, Maia Chance (e-ARC) – 3⭐
This is another one that was just okay for me.
The Book of Doors, Gareth Brown (purchased) – 4⭐
I was so eager to read this when I first heard about it because that synopsis is just too good to pass up! While I loved the plot, I felt like it just didn’t go as deep as I wanted with the characters. I wanted to know more about them and they just didn’t feel developed enough to me. But the story was great and it was a fun read.
A Novel Love Story, Ashley Poston (purchased) – 3⭐
This was very sweet, although I couldn’t totally get into it. But I recommend it for someone looking for a cozy read!
A Merry Little Meet Cute, Julie Murphy and Sierra Simone (e-ARC) – 3⭐
This was a mix of steamy and sweet that didn’t always mix well for me, but especially as we get closer to Christmas, if you’re looking for a seasonal romance, this might be the one for you.
Below Zero, Ali Hazelwood (library) – 3⭐
I read this novella, which turned out to be third in a series of novellas, because it became available on my library holds list before any of Ali Hazelwood’s full length novels. This was yet another that was just an ok read for me.
So that is my August reading wrapped up. I loved some of what I read, but not as much as I had hoped I would. Time to turn to my September quick lit and see how my reading was last month!
