Why I Love…Bob’s Burgers

Why I Love… is a feature where I talk about the things I love – some bookish, some not – and why I love them. Today I’m talking about why I love Bob’s Burgers.

Please let it be known that I frigging love this show. I’ve been watching it from day one, because I knew that the show was created by Loren Bouchard, who created Home Movies, another show that I dearly love, and also because H. Jon Benjamin was involved with the show, who voiced characters on Home Movies.

If you aren’t familiar with Bob’s Burgers, here’s an excerpt from the show’s website:

The animated comedy BOB’S BURGERS returns for a well-done third season. The series follows the ups and downs of BOB (H. Jon Benjamin), who runs Bob’s Burgers with the help of his wife and their three kids. Bob has big ideas about burgers, but his family falls short on service and sophistication. Despite the greasy counters, lousy location and dearth of customers, Bob and his family are determined to make every “Grand Re-Re-Re-opening” a success.

Bob’s wife, LINDA (John Roberts), stands by her man, though she’s easily distracted. Their eldest daughter, 13-year-old TINA (Dan Mintz), has minimal social skills and is a hopeless romantic with a thing for zombies. Middle child GENE (Eugene Mirman), the only boy in the family, is an aspiring musician with a thirst for life and a hunger for food. LOUISE (Kristen Schaal) is the bunny ears-wearing youngest daughter with an off-kilter sense of humor that makes her somewhat of a liability in the kitchen – and with the public.

Right away, the show had me laughing out loud. The writing is hilarious, clever, and funny without being cruel. The characters are all so funny in different ways, and over the course of four seasons, they’ve each become very distinct personalities. Of course, my favourite is Tina: deadpan, speaks in a monotone, awkward, loves boys and zombies and horses…she was destined to be my favourite.

I also love the music, which has become more central to the show as some episodes have featured original songs, which are really catchy but also super funny. There will apparently be a CD of music from the show, and I’m very likely going to get myself a copy when it’s available!

The show is coming back for a fifth season (yahoo!) and has been nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program, for the third time (double yahoo!).

Some of my favourite episodes are:

1. Torpedo (season one)

2. Burgerboss (seasone two) – Well it’s about a video game, so that was pretty much a given that I would love this episode!

3. Food  Truckin’ (season two)

4. Bad Tina (season two) – I love any Tina-centric episode!

5. Tina-Rannosaurus Wrecks (season three) – Yup, another Tina episode.

6. O.T.: The Outside Toilet (season three) – A talking toilet voiced by Jon Hamm. What more do you want??

7. Turkey in a Can (season four) – Turkey. Toilet. (Another toilet episode…?)

8. The Equestranauts (season four) – Conventions, fandoms, and the Brony-like Equesticles: it’s all here.

What about you – do you watch this one too? I’d love to hear from fellow fans. If you don’t watch it, please give it a try!
