Just One Reader's Opinion!

Quick Lit

October 2024

I’ve been reading so much, but I don’t always feel like writing a full review for everything. I was inspired by Modern Mrs. Darcy’s Quick Lit posts, as well as Hannah at So Obsessed With‘s monthly Quick Lit posts, and decided to do something similar as a way to briefly discuss the books I read in a month but don’t write full reviews for.

Nothing like New Year’s Eve to make me finally get around to posting my October quick lit! I’m going to keep this short and sweet so I can move on to November’s!

I read 8 books in October and reviewed one of them on the blog separately: Horror for Weenies: Everything You Need to Know About the Films You’re Too Scared to Watch, by Emily C. Hughes.

Here are my thoughts on the rest of my October reads:

The Queen of Poisons, Robert Thorogood (library) – 3⭐

This was another fun mystery in this cozy series, although the howdunnit left something to be desired, for my reading experience.

How To Make a Horror Movie and Survive, Craig DiLouie (purchased) – 3⭐

I loved the premise and this started strong but I just felt very ho-hum about it by the end.

Skull Daddy, Stephanie Anne (purchased) – 3.5⭐

This was a quick, creepy read, and by a local author! One of the best books I read for Halloween / spooky season vibes.

The Long Way Home, Louise Penny (library) – 3⭐

This was another solid entry in the Armand Gamache Three Pines series, but centred around a character that I don’t really care for, so not one of my favourites of the series.

Here Lies a Vengeful Bitch, Codie Crowley (purchased) – 3.5⭐

This was an entertaining YA thriller with a supernatural twist.

What Moves the Dead, T. Kingfisher (purchased) – 3⭐

This was fine. I read it as part of a reading challenge and it had great atmosphere for a spooky season read, but I didn’t love it.

The Sequel, Jean Hanff Korelitz (purchased) – 4⭐

I really loved The Plot and wasn’t expecting a sequel, so when I heard about this, I was so excited and could not wait to read this book! For the most part, I really enjoyed this (and I read a very detailed plot summary of The Plot to refresh my memory, which I highly recommend (or a reread) if the details aren’t fresh in your brain). Certain events strained credulity for me towards the end, but this was just such a fun read! If you liked The Plot I think you’ll definitely enjoy this sequel! It was definitely one of my favourite 2024 reads.
