Just One Reader's Opinion!

Quick Lit

September 2024

I’ve been reading so much, but I don’t always feel like writing a full review for everything. I was inspired by Modern Mrs. Darcy’s Quick Lit posts, as well as Hannah at So Obsessed With‘s monthly Quick Lit posts, and decided to do something similar as a way to briefly discuss the books I read in a month but don’t write full reviews for.

Well it’s December and I kind of forgot to post my September reads! Oops!

I read 10 books in September, one of which I reviewed separately: What Happened to Nina? by Dervla McTiernan. I also re-read Vicious by V.E. Schwab, which I reviewed many years ago after I first read it. My updated review: it’s still perfect!

Here are my thoughts on everything else I read in September:

None of This is True, Lisa Jewell (purchased) – 4⭐

This was a real page-turner! It was propulsive and twisty, and I am still enjoying mysteries with a podcast angle.

Cat + Gamer, Volume 1 and Volume 2, Wataru Nadatani (purchased) – 5⭐

This was absolutely adorable and delightful! As a cat person who also loves video games, this feels made for me. I am so looking forward to reading the rest of the series!

Someone in the Attic, Andrea Mara (purchased) – 3⭐

Initially this gave me Nightwatching vibes, but it moved at a much slower pace after the gripping opening. This one made me roll my eyes a few times at the protagonist but if you’re looking for a fun domestic thriller, this is a good pick!

How the Light Gets In, Louise Penny (library) – 4

I’m glad I stuck with this series after the first few books because the backstory of Gamache and his team is always more interesting to me than the mystery of each book, and so many things that have been building and swirling in the background came to a head in this installment. I quite enjoyed this one.

Flowerheart, Catherine Bakewell (ARC) – 3

This was a very sweet, cozy YA fantasy read that has cottagecore vibes and a pretty cover. It felt a bit low stakes to me and I never really felt compelled to pick it up and carry on reading.

Last Days, Adam Nevill (purchased) – 3

I loved the premise and there were some great creepy scenes. The ending really threw me for a loop though and didn’t feel like it fit with the rest of the book.

I Shot the Devil, Ruth McIver (purchased) – 3

I wanted to love this but I can’t put my finger on why this didn’t really work for me. It was dark and bleak, which I typically like in a mystery/thriller, but it felt too aimless at times I think.

Now that I’m caught up on talking about my September reads, it’s time to move on to October reads!
