Four people in a car, hoping to make Chicago by morning. One man driving, another telling stories that donβt add up. A woman in the back, silent and worried. And a hitchhiker with a broken nose. An hour behind them, the FBI descends on an old pumping station where a man was stabbed to deathβthe knife work professional, the killers nowhere to be seen.
All Jack Reacher wanted was a ride to Virginia. All he did was stick out his thumb. But he soon discovers he has hitched more than a ride. He has tied himself to a massive conspiracy, in which nothing is what it seems, and nobody is telling the truth.
My journey through the Jack Reacher novels continues! This book started strong for me, with Reacher hitching a ride with a car full of people who seem to have secrets, but around the halfway mark the story started to lose me.
At that point, the plot began to feel too convoluted for me to comfortably suspend any disbelief in order to just enjoy the story, and the villains and their motives felt unclear until the very end, when it seemed like Reacher figured nearly all of it out on his own, and then explained it to the FBI…I also mega cringed at his taunting of the baddies throughout.
Ultimately this one was just a bit too eye-roll-inducing for me to enjoy as much as I’ve enjoyed the others in the series, but I’ll be continuing on!
