Just One Reader's Opinion!

Week In Review

October 7 – 20

I missed doing a Week In Review post last week, so I’ll do a double post today! I hope my fellow Canadians had a lovely Thanksgiving!

The biggest thing in my life lately is the new Pokemon game for the 3DS. I got my copy last week. No joke, when a new game comes out, it takes over my life for at least a month. Thank goodness I have blog posts scheduled through November, because my reading time is definitely going to become Pokemon time for a while! I’ve been playing since the first generation of games came out like 15 years ago and I still love this series.

I got Pokemon X version (the other is Y) and I totally love it so far! The graphics, the music, the new Pokemon, the character customization…it’s all so fun! And the online stuff you can do is pretty impressive. The time I’ve spent on the Wonder Trade alone (sort of like a trade roulette) is ridiculous. I’m also amusing myself by trying to give funny nicknames to all my Pokemon. Good times.

I’ve been listening to a lot of podcasts lately. There are three that I try and listen to regularly:

Welcome to Night Vale: This one is my favourite! It’s funny but weird and a bit spooky, which is a perfect combination! The podcasts come out the 1st and 15th of the month, and I can’t wait for the next! I’ve told my younger sister about it and now she’s into it too! I’m very in love with my Night Vale t-shirt, which I am wearing right now. I always check back in with their store, and right now I’ve got my eye on those boy scouts buttons. Eternal Scout!!

The podcast description from the website:

WELCOME TO NIGHT VALEΒ is a twice-monthly podcast in the style of community updates for the small desert town of Night Vale, featuring local weather, news, announcements from the Sheriff’s Secret Police, mysterious lights in the night sky, dark hooded figures with unknowable powers, and cultural events. Turn on your radio and hide.

Vic’s Basement: I love watching EP Daily and Reviews on the Run (I was so sad when we cut back on our cable and lost the channel that played ROTR every day!). This is a podcast by the hosts of ROTR, Victor Lucas and Scott Jones, and they mainly discuss video games, movies, and television, and usually have an interview with someone working in the game industry. I love these two! They crack me up.

The podcast description from the website:

Join TV hosts Victor Lucas and Scott Jones of Reviews on the Run and EP Daily down in Vic’s underground man cave as they discuss the videogames they’re playing, the movies they’re watching, the toys they’re playing with, and all the happenings in the entertainment industry. The dynamic duo will entertain special guests, including fellow EP hosts, down in their 98-percent zombie-proof bunker. Don’t miss it!

Nerdist: I really enjoy listening to these. It’s not so much of an interview as it is a conversation with the guest, and I love learning things about them, like Daniel Radcliffe is a big NFL football fan. Who knew? I also love the music they use for the theme song! This podcast usually cracks me up.

The podcast description from the website:

I am Chris Hardwick. I am on TV a lot and have a blog at nerdist.com. This podcast is basically just me talking about stuff and things with my two nerdy friends Jonah Ray and Matt Mira, and usually someone more famous than all of us. Occasionally we swear because that is fun. I hope you like it, but if you don’t I’m sure you will not hesitate to unfurl your rage in the ‘reviews’ section because that’s how the Internet works.

I’m getting very excited for Allegiant to come out on Tuesday, the final book in Veronica Roth’s Divergent series! I’m getting the ebook, since I bought the first two books in ebook format, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how the story ends.

And the third Ontario Blog Squad’s meet up is coming up very soon! This will be my first time going, and I’m so excited! I’ll be going with my fellow Ottawa bloggers and I know it’s going to be a lot of fun!

As for books, I finished four books in the past couple of weeks: The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken (yes, I finished in time to avoid late fees at the library!); Some Girls Are by Courtney Summers; Tin Star by Cecil Castellucci; and Oddities & Entities by Roland Allnach.

I’m currently reading (and loving) Mindee Arnett’s The Nightmare Affair, which has been on my bookshelf for so long. I just love looking at the cover!

I also picked up a few books in the last week or two that I’m excited to read: Bellman and Black by Diane Setterfield; The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon; and The Waking Dark by Robin Wasserman.

I posted a few book reviews in the last couple of weeks: Tampa by Alissa Nutting; Born of Illusion by Teri Brown; Gloss by Marilyn Kaye; and Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock by Matthew Quick. I also posted a little review of the movie Gravity.

Coming up this week are my reviews of Oddities & Entities and Marisha Pessl’s Night Film.

Well, I’m off to have some coffee and play some Pokemon! Happy Sunday everyone!

I wound up enjoying this book so much that I immediately bought the rest of the books in the series and read them all one right after the other!
