Today I’m sharing my 14 favourite books read in 2014 (regardless of publication date). You can look back at my lists for 2011, 2012, and 2013.
It was so difficult to keep it to 14 books! I read so many great books this year. This list is obviously subjective, and is not necessarily a list of the ‘best’ books that I read this year – some books I rated with 5 stars didn’t make the list – but it’s a list of books that, looking back over what I read in 2014, stayed with me or made an impression, or that were the most fun or intense or exciting to read.
These are in no particular order:
1. Winger by Andrew Smith
This was one of the first books I read in 2014, and I knew right away that it would end up on this list. I’ve got to read Andrew Smith’s other books!!
2. Unbreakable by Kami Garcia
I LOVE THIS BOOK! The sequel, Unmarked, is just as great. This is the supernatural/paranormal series that I’ve been waiting for! I love absolutely everything about it.
3. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han
This book was just pure fun to read. I love the characters and the cookies!
4. Not a Drop to Drink by Mindy McGinnis
This was such a fascinating, fantastic read. I love survival stories, and this was a story of survival and love in a bleak, desolate environment that Mindy McGinnis made feel so real.
5. Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson
This was a terrific contemporary read! So so good!
6. Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass #2) by Sarah J. Maas
If you like fantasy, romance, action, and totally kick-ass heroines, you must read this series.
7. Ruin and Rising (The Grisha #3) by Leigh Bardugo
This was a pretty perfect series finale. Definitely one of the best books I read this year, and I can’t think of anything I would have changed.
8. The Girl with All the Gifts by M.R. Carey
This book was nothing like what I expected. It was scary and heartbreaking. I loved it!
9. Bird Box by Josh Malerman
Oh man, this was one of those books I simply could not put down. It was super suspenseful and unsettling, and I really really loved it!
10. Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas
Twisty, suspenseful, and a lot of fun. If you like mysteries, this is a must-read.
11. Falling Into Place by Amy Zhang
Beautifully written, and a book that had a lot of buzz early on. I was not disappointed!
12. The Merciless by Danielle Vega
Dark, violent, and with a bright pink cover…what’s not to love?
13. Blue Lily, Lily Blue (The Raven Cycle #3) by Maggie Stiefvater
My review is being posted later this week, but it should be no surprise that one of Maggie Stiefvater’s books made this list. This is my favourite series, and the latest book was just as magical as the first two.
14. Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer
I still have to write my review of this one. This was an intense, fascinating sci-fi read that had a touch of psychological horror too. I read the whole thing in one sitting.
There you have it! Have you read any of these? What are your favourite 2014 reads?

I loved Blue Lily, Lily Blue and I’m kicking myself that I haven’t read Winger yet. I’ve heard nothing but good things.
Winger is excellent!! Now I just have to read Andrew Smith’s other books!
Read ‘The Girl With All The Gifts’ and ‘Bird Box’ recently. They’ve both stayed with me. Great stories told extremely well. Thanks for recommending them!
I’m so glad you liked them! I thought they were both so so so wonderful.
